Freedom in Forgiveness

“He was angry with me.  He attacked me.
He defeated me.  He robbed me.”
Those who dwell on such thoughts will never be free from hatred.

“He was angry with me.  He attacked me.
He defeated me.  He robbed me.”
Those who do not dwell on such thoughts will surely become free.

Maybe Alzheimer’s is setting in early.  But I’m finding this set of twin verses to be true.  Wrongs that were done to me fade until the memory is no longer even a wisp.  But if I cry out against them, they capture me.  Then I live in a quagmire, unable to move in any direction.

Forgiveness is a requirement, not an option. If I can’t move out of the quagmire, then there is no hope.  And if there is no hope, then why live.  So forgiveness is required.

The beauty of forgiveness is that the perceived wrongs become so small.  And then they vanish.  When you hit that point, you are totally free.

I know all of this sounds obvious, probably trite.  Still, living and knowing something are quite different.  In this case, I want to live it.

  1. Forgiveness is a simple thing, as is freedom. Thanks for making me see these two feelings in the same column.
